Discover Ainhoa’s history and natural environment just 30 minutes from the campsite
Ainhoa is a traditional Basque village nestling in a huge and outstanding leafy setting. Here you'll find a classic village with its pelota wall, town hall, church and timber framed labourdin-style buildings. Numerous bastides (country houses), which were very fashionable when they were built in the 13th century, were built side-by-side in the town centre The purpose of these impressive houses was to provide a roof for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Today, they comprise a major part of the town's heritage. Just alongside the town hall, discover the Maison du Patrimoine d'Ainhoa (heritage centre) which will reveal some of the town's secrets. Numerous historical remains bear witness to the high level of activity which once went on in this district only a few centuries ago. Ainhoa’s wash house is a good example of this. Today surrounded with greenery, it was once a major part of village life. Finally, those who love hiking and biking will enjoy taking a trip along the hiking and cycling trails around Ainhoa and exploring the 431 hectares of the town's forests. In this hilly and mountainous setting, you’ll be travelling through a superb natural environment and discovering a particularly rich selection of plants and wildlife.
